Clerks- Same Day Voter Registration Goes into Effect

Clerks- Same day voter register goes into effect. 17 V.S.A. § 2144. There is no longer a deadline to register to vote. An unregistered voter will be able to go to the polling place on Election Day and register to vote. This applies to all elections (local and statewide) going forward.

Clerks- Last Day to Warn Public Hearing for Charter Changes

Clerks- Last day to warn the first public hearing if charter adoption, amendment or repeal is to be voted at town meeting (60 days before town meeting). 17 V.S.A. §§ 2641(a), 2645(a)(3) and (6)

Voters- Last Day to File a Petition for Town Meeting Day Article

All day

Voters- Last day for voters to file a petition with the town clerk to have an article appear on the ballot. 17 V.S.A. §2642(a)(3)(A) (47 days prior to town meeting). Petition must contain signatures from at least 5% of registered voters in the municipality.

Clerks- Must Notify if Petition Does Not Conform

Clerks- If petitions turned in do not conform to statute, clerks must notify the petitioners in writing within 24 hours why the petition does not conform. Petitioners must return supplementary petitions within 48 hours of being notified by the clerk. 17 V.S.A. §2642(a)(3)(A)

BCA- Last Day to Divide the Checklist, if Necessary

BCA - Last day for board of civil authority to, if necessary, divide the checklist according to geographic boundaries. 17 V.S.A. § 2501(a). The BCA is required to divide the checklist “If the questions and candidates to be voted upon are not identical for all voters in the town, so that different ballots will be used depending on where a voter lives”. 17 V.S.A. § 2501(a).

Clerks- First day a clerk may post warnings for town meeting (40 days before the meeting). 17 V.S.A. §2641(a)

Clerks Using Tabulators- First Day to Warn Meeting for Counting Absentee Ballots the Day Before the Election

All day

Clerks Using Tabulators- First day to warn a meeting to take place the day before an election for the purpose of depositing absentee ballots into the vote tabulator. The BCA must vote to authorize the use of this procedure. Ballots can only be run through the tabulator the day before the election, must be conducted in the town clerk’s office, and follow all other procedures as laid out in 17 V.S.A. § 2546a.

Clerks- Official copy of proposed charter amendments must be filed in town clerk’s office by this date if vote is to be taken on town meeting day (10 days before first public hearing). 17 V.S.A. § 2645(a)(2)

Local Candidates- Last Day to File Petitions and Consent of Candidate with Town Clerk

All day

Candidates- In Australian ballot towns, nominating petitions and consent of candidate forms for town offices must be filed with the municipal clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. (sixth Monday before the election). A nominating petition must be signed by 30 voters or one percent of the legal voters, whichever is less. 17 V.S.A. § 2681(a)(1)(2). Nominating petitions must contain the candidates name as it appears on the voter checklist. The consent of candidate may contain any nickname a candidate wishes to appear on the ballot. 17 V.S.A. § 2681(a)(3)
